How to Play Scattergories

Game Setup

Scattergories is a fast-paced category game that challenges players' creativity and vocabulary. Each round, players must think of words that fit specific categories and start with a randomly chosen letter. The goal is to come up with unique answers that other players don't think of.

  • Gather 2-6 players (works with more in teams)
  • Prepare a list of 12 categories (or use official Scattergories cards)
  • Set a timer for 3 minutes per round
  • Use this tool to generate a random letter for each round

Playing a Round

  1. Click "Generate Letters" above to get your random letter
  2. Start the 3-minute timer
  3. All players write answers for each category starting with that letter
  4. When time's up, players take turns reading their answers
  5. Cross out any duplicate answers - only unique answers score points
  6. Each unique answer is worth 1 point

Scoring Example

If the letter is "B" and the category is "Things in the Kitchen": Player 1 writes "Blender", Player 2 writes "Bowl", Player 3 writes "Blender". Players 1 and 3 get 0 points (duplicate), but Player 2 gets 1 point for the unique answer "Bowl".

Scattergories Tips & Tricks

💡 Think Outside the Box

Don't go for the most obvious answers. Other players are likely thinking the same thing! Try to think of less common words that still fit the category. For "Animals" with letter "C", consider "Caterpillar" instead of "Cat".

⚡ Use Alliteration

Alliterative answers can help you remember and often sound clever. For "Famous People" with letter "M", try "Marilyn Monroe" or "Mickey Mouse". Both words start with the letter, making them memorable.

📚 Expand Your Vocabulary

The more words you know, the better you'll do. Read widely and pay attention to unusual words. Uncommon vocabulary gives you an edge in finding unique answers that others won't duplicate.

🎯 Fill Everything First

It's better to have an answer for every category than to perfect a few. Write something for each one quickly, then go back to improve answers if time allows. A mediocre unique answer beats a blank.

🌍 Think Geographically

For difficult letters, geographical terms can be lifesavers. Cities, countries, and landmarks work for many categories. "Zagreb" might be your go-to Z answer for multiple categories.

🎬 Use Pop Culture

Movies, TV shows, books, and games are goldmines for unique answers. These references can apply to many categories and are less likely to be duplicated than common nouns.
